#21 Mental Health

Today the blogging challenge is to write about mental health.

Sigh.

I really don't have much to say about this topic. Maybe I would have something to say if they had asked this question three years ago, when Tom was a baby and we were still in panic mode. I would have had a lot to say back then but we are incredibly average now. Sure, we have to keep an eye on Tom's glaucoma and we are still doing two tube feeds a day, but that's all. I now count it a prividge to have a boring life.

So what helps my mental health?
It is not easy raising a child with complex medical needs. You need to find some time to do something for yourself to stay sane. Sometimes I hide out in the tub with a book for an hour. Even just getting some time to paint my nails can be good for my mental health.

I am lucky because I have family that can care for Tom so my husband and I can go out to dinner and have drinks with friends sometimes. I think getting out as a couple really helps me and it helps my relationship with my husband. My husband is very involved in Tom's health and care which helps my mental health. I don't know what I would do if I had a husband that couldn't do a tube feed or wouldn't take Tom for an evening so I could go meet a friend for dinner every once in a while.

Going to work and thinking about things other than myself also helps my mental state. I think you can be too introspective. It's good to think about other things and take a step back from my own concerns.

Sorry. This mental health topic is a bit of a dud. I know! How about a cute picture of Tom? That's what you really want, anyway.
This picture has nothing at all to do with mental health but it's cute.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow! I will be trying my best to get a good family picture in hopes that we can send out photo greeting cards this year. Wish me luck!
