#3 Music Together

Hellooooooooooo Everybody!
We purchased Music Together classes for Tom with the money he received from his birthday. Best. Idea. Ever.

So what is Music Together?

Tom even feels musical pre-surgery!
"Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement program for children from birth through age seven - and the grownups who love them.

...it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasises and facilitates adult involvement."  -from www.musictogether.com

This class is relaxed and fun. I am not much of a "participator" but even I feel comfortable and play along in class. Tom's Dad is very musical, he plays and writes music, so he was very enthusiastic about Tom taking these classes.

Though the most enthusiastic person by far is Tom! He loves these songs. His favorite is the Hello Song - listen to a song here. Catchy stuff, right?

We meet at a local community center for class in a large studio room with a wooden floor and large rug. It is the perfect space to turn the music up and let the kids enjoy it. But we don't just sit there and listen - we play, dance, practice rhythmic movement and use instruments.

Time to drum!

The woman who leads our class plays the trumpet for the Pittsburgh Ballet and Opera Orchestras. You can tell she is passionate about music and believes it can have a positive effect on the development of young children.

Tom likes props!

Another mom who has a child with visual impairments recommended this class to us and she said they welcome children with special needs into these classes. That was so nice to hear! Then I went to their website and saw that serving children of all abilities seemed to be a part of their mission. Of course I know that Tom's blindness does not stop him from participating in a music class; it's just nice to hear that this organization believes that too!

Seeing Tom enjoy class is reward enough but I also think he is speaking more. Music is a huge motivator for Tom and he loves to sing along when he can. I see more music classes in his future!

  1. True, true, this is a great idea. I ought to do this for Orion, too. He enjoys music so why not go where they have loads of stuff to play with?

  2. How amazing! That sounds like an awesome time especially since they are already prepared for and welcoming children of all abilities. I'll have to check this out for Max. He loves music and has a few different keyboards and drums.

    1. You can go sit in on a class to see if it's something he would enjoy. It's a no pressure atmosphere. The kids don't have to "perform" or anything. I really like that it is very child led. They can participate in whatever way they feel comfortable.

  3. This sounds incredible. My daughter is receiving one on one private dance classes. It's been wonderful for her, she has the whole room to herself and is learning the same class schedule as the beginning class so she has actually been able to dance with those girls and has done well.
