What is Tommy Getting for Christmas?

Do you want to know what Tommy is getting for Christmas? Of course you do! Here is a list of what Tom is getting and why I think it will be a good gift for him.

Tom's excited Christmas face!
Mr. Potato Head Super Spud This is one big potato head. The large size of the pieces make them easier to manipulate and easier to understand without vision. He can really get an understanding of what these pieces represent and have fun creating silly people. This toy also helps him become more aware of his body and body parts.

Playskool Chuck My Talking Truck This truck is big, sturdy and simple. It says many phrases and it rumbles and moves. I think he will love it. He is ready for some big boy toys and I think this is a good one.

Neurosmith Musical Touch You can create music using the power of touch with this toy. There are classical melodies, percussion sounds or animal noises you can use to create music. I can't wait to see what he thinks of this toy!
Tom has a Thomas book with sounds that he just loves so I thought it would be good for him to have a Thomas toy so he can understand more about trains. "I've been working on the railroad" is one of his favorite songs lately so I know I need to get this guy on a train soon. Maybe he can ride the train at the mall if we are brave enough to take him to see Santa?

Thomas & Friends Bathtub Squirters These will be fun in the tub now and fun in the pool this summer. Tom loves playing in water so I knew he needed some new bath toys. It is always a good idea to build hand strenth for future braille readers. I am serious!

Bristle Blocks- Tom discovered his love of bristle blocks while in daycare this year. I got reports that he would sit quitely and play with them for a long time. These blocks fit together easily and are great for young children.
We are trying to hold back on gifts this year because, as an only child, Thomas gets a lot! We are going to have to donate some of our current toys to make room for new ones.

New toys means new opportunities to adapt and add Braille lables. If your child has some sight you can change the stickers on the toys to colors your child see better (high contrast or red). Switching out a busy animal sticker for a plain shiny red sticker could really help a low vision child.

You can lable the boxes or the toys themself with Braille labels. Add your child's name to personalize gifts. When a child finds Braille everywhere they learn that Braille is an important part of everyday life. Of course, Braille books are the ultimate gift! They always fit and can be enjoyed for years.

  3. I found some other rabbit trails/gifts to purchase too! I have a leap frog fridge letter toy, it sings the abc song and tells the name of the letter, I have been looking for the word speller that would be the next step up and figured they no longer make it, I was right. The great thing is I found it as well as flashcards for the leap frog reader we have. My daughter can see/read 72 point font with a little effort so these toys will be great to add to what we already own. Would you mind writing a post about wiki sticks and how they can be used? I saw them recommended in several places but since I've never seen them don't understand what they could be useful for . Thank you in advance!
