Little by Little

Tom is a huge fan of games of any kind. He loves music so anything that involves music and movement is going to be a hit. Here he is playing ring around the rosie with his grandparents recently. The more you keep him occupied and moving the more you will get out of Thomas. It really takes effort to get him to interact and play. If left to his own devices he will start to explore and that usually means walking up the stairs now. (Please note: I just mean that Thomas isn't really the type to sit and just play with his toys. He needs to be engaged and very well supervised.)

As soon as he has a free moment he makes his way to the staircase and up he goes. It's becoming an obsession. All parents know that you really have to worry when things are quiet. That usually means they are working hard at something - usually something messy or dangerous. In Tom's case, that means he is working hard on walking up the stairs all by himself. If you try to give him your hand he simply removes your hand and goes back to what he was doing. The goal of getting up the stairs is so he can play in the bathroom. It's important that he runs in and slams the door shut on you several times. The next favorite bathroom game is climbing into and out of the tub. Good times!

I wish I had a picture of it or a video but I don't right now. I'll work on getting one this weekend since his Dad is home to be Tom's stair "spotter" so I can take the video. I really love that he is so brave and independent. This dude was mean to be on the go!

Twice last week Thomas walked over to where we keep his canes and took one all by himself. He danced around the living room with his cane and had a lot of fun. I thought it was so cool that he sought out the cane by himself. Now we are taking the cane with us everywhere and I think he is getting comfortable with it. Sometimes we play a game of using the cane in the house. We see what we can bump into with his cane and then reach down to explore what he found. I think he is starting to understand what an important tool this cane can be. He only plays this game for about five minutes before he is done but even that much exposure helps. Little by little, we are getting somewhere (literally)!

  1. I just found your blog and I love it. I watch a kid who is blind after school, and have been for the past seven years. It has been amazing to see the improvements he has made along the way, from not being able to read braille to now being able to read braille. He is also able to play just about any song on the piano perfectly. It is so true that they really can do anything that they set their mind to. He too goes up to Michigan every so often for surgeries and checkups and has been able to see some light. It is amazing at how much even the smallest thing can help them.

  2. I think its so awesome that he uses the cane all the time now! From watching him just learn to use it, to seeing him find it on his own, is awesome!
Hanna's obsessed with stairs as well...she'll go up and down multiple times finding a new way to do each time. :)
