Tom is scheduled for an Exam Under Anesthesia (EUA) tomorrow. It's the best way to get a good look at the health of his eyes. They will be checking his glaucoma, retinas, optic nerves and measuring him for new contacts.
We have been waiting for months to get this EUA done because his contact prescription and sizing was old. The contacts weren't fitting and kept falling out. Since Thomas does not have lenses in his eyes he need these aphakic contacts to allow his eye some ability to focus. It will be interesting to see if there is a difference in him when he gets his new contacts. When he was recently re-evaluated at the WPSBC, they noted that he was less visually responsive than in their previous assessments. I guess the contacts do make a difference for him! That is great news because I hate to put Tom through extra interventions if they aren't helping him.
I am also wondering if his TVI (Teacher of the Visually Impaired) notices a difference in Tom when the contacts are in. His TVI has never worked with Tom with new contacts. He started with us last fall when we finally got Tom's glaucoma under control after lots of EUA's and surgeries. At that point contacts weren't very high on the priority list, and then a new Pediatric Ophthalmologist took over Tom's care which delayed things further. I am so excited to get some new contacts for Tommy. We can finally put that money from the Lion's Club to good use!
I'm hoping for good news after tomorrow's EUA! Hope his retinas are still the same and that is optic nerves look good. They will also be checking to see if he is a candidate for an interocular lens implant in his right eye. We have already been told that his left eye will not accept a lens implant. I will feel so much better after this is over tomorrow. These EUAs are nervewracking!
Ugh, I understand nerves racking! :) I hope theres no news, or all good! (no news = good news in my mind)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with everything!
I can't wait to see him running around with those new contacts in!
