Halloween Costumes

I did the gnome thing before it was cool.
Tom has been a lumberjack, a cowboy, a gnome, and a dinosaur.

We could never get away with a hat these days. Do the crazy costumes when they are young!
He makes a cute lumberjack!
We were early on the moustache trend too.
This year we are repeating one of the costumes. Yeah, a little lame I know, but Tom old enough now that the costume should be for him. It's very, very temping to put together a costume that I think is funny. (So temping. You have no idea!) But these days it is more about Tom's experience.

My little dinosaur. This is a couple weeks after his first eye surgery and just before his second.
We are choosing a concept he understands and one that can be purchased. This year we are going with easy. No rushing around trying to create something. I just don't have the energy for it right now. His first costume was store bought and the others were either all homemade, or a hybrid of homemade and store bought. This year I was out of ideas and out of time.

Last year's happy cowboy. He had some cow hide chaps that we bought but the rest of the outfit was normal clothes.
Halloween is usually a chilly night around here so that limits costume ideas a bit. Once I really wanted to make Tommy an old-time strong man but it's too darn cold for that! It would be so cute though. Any readers from warmer areas want to give it a try? You could even paint on a little moustache!

I love mixing in real clothes like I was able to do with the cowboy. Who want to wear an itchy costume when you can make something out of real clothes? I think this is the key for kids with sensory issues. The cowboy stuff we bought last year came with a fringed vest that Tom HATED! So we dumped the vest and went with a flannel shirt and bandanna. I think he looked great!

I also think a flannel shirt is a very versatile base for Halloween costumes. We could have made Tom a farmer this year with the flannel shirt because after visiting two farms he would be into that idea. I really like to choose a concept that makes sense to Tom. All I saw in stores were superhero costumes, or figures from TV shows or movies. That does nothing for Tom. Amazon.com to the rescue! I hope Tommy's costume is as cute as it looked online. You will see it soon!
